Thursday, June 9, 2026 - A devastating windstorm has struck Gashu’a community, the headquarters of Bade Local Government Area of Yobe State, destroying numerous houses and property worth millions of naira.
According to reports, the windstorm, which occurred
yesterday evening, rendered many families homeless and destroyed their
valuables, including businesses and food items.
Some residents said about four people reportedly lost their
lives. This is yet to be confirmed by the relevant authorities.
“This is one of the most devastating disasters I have ever
seen in my entire life. I think deforestation contributed significantly to this
tragic incident,” a 65-year-old resident said.
The windstorm, which accompanied the onset of the rainy
season, left a trail of destruction, damaging hundreds of residential houses as
well as means of livelihood.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Yobe State
Emergency Management Agency (Yobe SEMA) confirmed the development, expressing
deep concern over the heavy rainfall and accompanying strong winds that
affected communities in Gashu’a (Bade LGA), Yunusari LGA, and Bursari LGA.
“Following reports received from the affected local
government authorities and community leaders, Yobe SEMA is deploying emergency
response teams, supported by staff and volunteers from the neighbouring local
government areas of Jakusko, Karasuwa, Geidam, and Nguru, to conduct a rapid
on-the-ground deep-dive assessment of the situation,” the agency said.
It also said preliminary findings indicated that numerous
homes had sustained significant damage, with the majority of those affected
being vulnerable households.
“We extend our heartfelt sympathies to all families who have
been displaced or whose homes and livelihoods have been impacted by this
unfortunate incident,” Yobe SEMA said.
