Wednesday, November 4, 2026 - A retired Ohio State University music professor has been sentenced to life in prison after admitting he killed his wife, claiming an online extortion scheme led to the attack.
James Hill, 77, will be eligible for parole after 15 years
following his guilty plea on October 28, 2026. He also admitted cruelty to a
companion animal after attacking the couple’s dog. According to court
documents, Hill told investigators that a woman he had been communicating with
online threatened to release unclad photographs he had sent her unless he paid
$15,000 in Apple gift cards.
He said he received the demand on November 9, 2025, and
believed the only way out was to unalive his entire family. Hill told
investigators he first searched for a gun but could not find it. He claimed his
wife, Mary, 64, had hidden the firearm years earlier, so he took a knife
instead.
According to his account, Mary was sitting at a computer in
the couple’s den when he approached her from behind and began rubbing her
shoulders. She told him it felt “good”. Hill then stabbed her in the chest. He
told investigators that he apologised and held her as she passed on.He
subsequently went into the living room and attacked the couple’s dog. Court
documents said the animal was struck but managed to escape.
Before seeking help, Hill allegedly used his computer to
delete several photographs and documents. At about 2:30pm, he called 911 and
told the dispatcher: “We need police and an ambulance.” The call disconnected
when the dispatcher asked what was happening.
Hill then unlocked the front door, sat on a couch and
stabbed himself in the chest. According to WBNS, he remained there until police
arrived about four minutes later. Court documents obtained by TMZ showed that
Hill initially pleaded not guilty over his wife’s demise. He later withdrew
that plea and admitted the fatal attack and animal cruelty. His sentence means
he could become eligible for parole in his early 90s.
