Wednesday, October 21, 2026 - US President Donald Trump has proposed renaming the state of New Mexico to "New America," claiming the change would boost property values, increase incomes, and elevate the state's national prestige.
Writing on social media, Trump argued that the current name
fails to reflect the state's identity as part of the United States.
"New Mexico must immediately change its name to New
America. We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America! This name
would greatly increase the value and prestige of the state! Home values and
incomes would rise, and you would be even prouder to honor our beautiful
American flag! Perhaps even the unfair elections for which New Mexico is known
would become fair again!" Trump wrote.
The proposal comes amid continuing political commentary from
the president regarding state-level governance and electoral processes.
