Fire fighters retrieve body of man from well in Kwara

Wednesday, September 23, 2026 - The Kwara State Fire Service has recovered the body of a 52-year-old man, Alaba Ayeni, from a domestic well in Ilorin.

The Public Relations Officer of the service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. 

According to the statement, children in the community discovered that the man was inside the well located off Asa-Dam Road and immediately reported the situation to elders. 

Firefighters responded to a distress call about the incident and arrived at the scene at about 8:42am on Tuesday.

“The Kwara State Fire Service on Tuesday, 22nd September 2026, responded to an emergency at beside Lamp Bearers Islamic School, off Asa-Dam Road, Ilorin, following a report of a man who had been found inside a domestic well,” the statement read.

"The Fire Service received the distress call and turned out at 08:42hrs. On arrival, our firefighters commenced a recovery operation and successfully recovered the body of the deceased, identified as Alaba Ayeni, aged 52.

"According to information gathered during the operation, children in the community discovered that the man was inside the domestic well and immediately reported the situation to elders in the vicinity. 

"The location was also said to be close to the residence of the deceased.

"After the recovery operation, the body was formally handed over to DPO Bolaji of Budo-Nuhu Police Station, Nigeria Police Force, for further necessary action.

"The Chief Fire Officer, CFS Alabi Muhammed, expressed concern over the incident and urged residents to ensure that domestic wells and other open water sources within residential areas are properly secured and covered to prevent accidents.

"He also advised parents, guardians and community leaders to ensure that children are not allowed to move around unattended near wells, drainage channels and other potentially hazardous areas.

“The Kwara State Fire Service commiserates with the family and community over the unfortunate incident and remains committed to responding promptly to emergencies and protecting lives and property across the state."
