Friday, August 7, 2026 - Former Manchester United forward Diego Forlan has been named as the new interim head coach of Uruguay.
His appointment comes after Marcelo Bielsa left
his role as first-team boss of the national team following their chaotic World
Cup campaign.
Uruguay failed to win a single match in Group H – drawing
with Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde before losing to Spain.
That prompted the ex-Leeds boss to resign after a major
fallout with the players.
Forlan will lead his country during their autumn friendlies and oversee
the side until a permanent head coach is appointed.
The 47-year-old is currently in charge of the Uruguay u-20
side and will continue in that role, having started his coaching career with
short spells at Penarol and Atenas de San Carlos.
The Uruguayan FA confirmed the news on social media on
Thursday.
They wrote: “Diego Forlan comes home.
“He will be in charge of the U20 national team and the
senior national team.”
Forlan is regarded as one of Uruguay's greatest-ever players
and scored 36 goals in 112 caps for the national team, winning the Golden Boot
at the 2010 World Cup.
His club career took in spells with sides including Atletico
Madrid, Villarreal and Inter Milan, with Forlan twice winning the European
Golden Shoe during his stint in Spain.
He scored 17 times in 98 games for Manchester United during
a disappointing spell in the Premier League, prior to that prolific period in
La Liga.
