Tuesday, August 11, 2026 - Amazon founder and billionaire Jeff Bezos is part of a consortium seeking to acquire a minority stake in Liverpool Football Club.

British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia will lead the consortium, with Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin also involved.

The group is expected to buy approximately a one-third stake in Liverpool FC, who are majority-owned by Fenway Sports Group (FSG).

Sky News has reported that Fenway Sports Group are "preparing to make an announcement" about the consortium later this week.

The proposed deal would see three of the world's richest people become co-owners of Liverpool, arguably the biggest club in England.

The consortium's investment will value the Reds at $6 billion, similar to the NBA's Boston Celtics and the NFL's Miami Dolphins.

Their stake in Liverpool will reportedly be just over 30 percent, even though it was previously expected to be less.

It would be Jeff Bezos' first deal in football, while Eduardo Saverin was part of a failed takeover bid for Chelsea FC.

Their investment could be key to returning Liverpool to the top of both English and European football over the coming years.

Bezos is one of the most famous businessmen in the world and the owner of e-commerce giant Amazon, which he founded in 1994 out of his Seattle garage.

His other investments include aerospace company Blue Origin and venture capital firm Nash Holdings, which is the ownership vehicle for The Washington Post.

Bhatia is a 46-year-old British Indian entrepreneur, who has an investment banking background.

He currently manages a multi-asset investment firm called AyBe Capital, which invests in a range of diversified sectors including technology, media, property and real estate, consumer retail, and health.

Bhatia is married to Vanisha Mittal Bhatia, who is the daughter of Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal.

Forbes estimates that Bezos' personal fortune is in the region of $281bn (£209bn), making him the third-richest person in the world behind Elon Musk and Google co-founder Larry Page.

It's unclear how much Bhatia himself is worth. But his father-in-law, billionaire steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, is worth an estimated £23.2bn according to Forbes. That makes him the 72nd richest person in the world.
