AAU ASUU declares indefinite strike over non-implementation of 2025 agreement

Tuesday, August 25, 2026 -The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Ambrose Alli University, AAU, Ekpoma chapter, has declared an indefinite strike over the alleged non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria-ASUU agreement by the Edo State Government.

The union disclosed this in a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr Cyril Oziegbe Onogbosele, and Secretary, Dr William Odion, and made available to newsmen in Benin City.

The union, in the statement dated Monday, August 24, 2026, said the strike would take effect today, Tuesday, August 25, 2026.

The statement said the decision was reached at the union’s congress held on Monday following the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum earlier issued to the State government and the management of the university.

“The Congress deliberated on the update regarding the ultimatum after several failed attempts by the branch to get the university authorities and the Edo State Government to implement the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement.

“The briefing indicated that there was no formal response from the university authorities and Edo State Government over the 14-day ultimatum on the implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement in the university.

“Specifically, Congress was informed that the Agreement was yet to be implemented and that there was no formal commitment from the university authorities and Edo State Government on the implementation of the Agreement in the university,” the statement said.

It added that the Congress, after exhaustive deliberations, decried the failure of the university authorities and the Edo State Government to meet the union’s demands.

The statement listed the demands to include the implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement and payment of accrued arrears of allowances from January 2026 to date.

The indefinite strike, which would commence at 12:01am, would involve the total withdrawal of statutory services by members.

The statement added that the industrial action covers teaching and lecturing, conduct and invigilation of all forms of examinations, including undergraduate, postgraduate, oral, CBE and paper-based examinations, as well as statutory meetings.

Others include departmental, faculty, senate and committee meetings, students’ research project supervision and Industrial Training (IT)/Teaching Practice supervision.

“Congress mandated the Executive Committee (EXCO) of the branch to engage the press/media through press conferences, releases, etc., over the non-implementation of the Agreement in the university.

“Finally, Congress further mandated the EXCO to activate the Strike Monitoring Team and implored members to strictly abide by its resolutions,” the statement said.
