Thursday, February 22, 2024 – Mavis Hawa Koomson, the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, has told Ghanaians to appreciate the relatively low cost of living in Ghana compared to other countries.
In
an interview on Onua FM’s morning show, Yɛn Nsɛmpa, Koomson highlighted the
high cost of rent in Canada, noting that even a single room could cost over
2,000 Canadian dollars per month, significantly higher than in Ghana.
“People
have been complaining that rent is expensive in Ghana.”
“They should go to Canada.”
“For a month, you pay over 2,000 Canadian dollars.”
“That’s for a single room, not even a chamber and hall,” she
stated in Twi.
Koomson
acknowledged the global crisis affecting the cost of living but emphasized that
Ghana remains comparatively affordable and attributed this to her Government’s
efforts.
She urged Ghanaians to be content with the situation in the
country, saying, “Things are hard now, and there is a high cost of living
everywhere, and when you compare Ghana to other countries, Ghana is doing far
better.”
Responding to criticisms that living conditions in Canada
surpassed those in Ghana, Koomson disputed the notion, asserting that the cost
of living in Canada isn’t necessarily better.
The Minister also urged individuals who consumed fishes
washed ashore to own up, emphasizing the health risks associated with such
actions.
