Friday, January 19, 2024 – Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, has said that Nigeria’s victory over Cote d’Ivoire in the Africa Cup of Nations second group A game on Thursday, January 18, was a strong statement.
William Troost-Ekong’s second-half penalty broke the
deadlock and secured all three points for the Super Eagles against the hosts.
The result leaves Nigeria tied with Equatorial Guinea on four points with goal
difference.
In the post-match press conference, Osimhen said their game
plan worked against the Ivoirians.
He said:
“We came with a game plan because we knew it was going to be
a good fight against Cote d’Ivoire because they are a big team. The game was
really tense but for me, it’s normal to play against a big team like Cote
d’Ivoire.
“The first game against Equatorial Guinea was good and we
created lots of chances but eventually it ended in a draw.
“This game against Cote d’Ivoire is a big statement for us. We needed to
win and we needed to make a statement in the competition and we love the
outcome. We played better and we waited for them in the midfield. We are really
happy about the outcome and we will keep on doing our best.”
Osimhen was named Man of the Match in the game against Cote d’Ivoire.
